A Celebration of the Ministry of Bishop Violet L. Fisher

by Lonely Christopher

Greetings in the precious name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It is with great joy that I write this letter in celebration of your ministry in the United Methodist Church. Your presence in the Council of Bishops and well as in the Northeastern College of Bishops has been a blessing to all of us. You have served as a prophetic leader, keeping us mindful of the words of Micah: “…and what does the Lord require of (us) but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with God.” In your ability to speak out, you have kept the plumb line that God showed Amos before us. Your honesty and forthrightness have cut through our deliberations many times, focusing us on what is foundational to our faith and practice. Personally, you have been my dear sister, spiritual mentor and guide. I cherish this special relationship that has been ours and all that I have learned from you. It has also been a deep privilege to serve as your colleague on the College and Council of Bishops. Not only have you been of support to me in the ministry of the church, but you have been mine and Prema’s friend. It was a great gift for you to be with Prema and I at the twenty-fifth anniversary celebration of our marriage. May God’s blessing be upon this day as you retire from the active episcopacy and enter into continued service in new ways. I know that this not an ending for you but doors opening in many and exciting ways as the Lord leads you.
